1. The service
Cortex.md is a local-first knowledge tool made up of a website, account and billing pages, and a Chromium browser extension. The extension saves web pages, selections, documents, Google Drive files, Gmail threads, and YouTube transcripts into an Obsidian-compatible markdown vault that you choose on your own device.
The service also includes hosted Cortex AI features. These features can organize captures, create links, answer questions from your vault, run web research, and perform other credit-based workflows.
2. Accounts and eligibility
You need a Cortex.md account to use hosted AI, billing, and subscription features. Sign-in uses email one-time codes. You are responsible for keeping access to your email account secure and for activity under your Cortex.md account.
You must use Cortex.md lawfully and only in ways that respect the rights of others. You may not use the service to process content that you do not have the right to use, to abuse third-party services, or to generate unlawful, harmful, or deceptive material.
3. Plans, billing, and monthly credits
Cortex.md is a paid service with a free tier. Paid Plus and Pro plans are billed through Stripe and unlock larger monthly credit allowances and additional AI features. Current plan features and prices are listed on the pricing page.
- Credits. AI actions consume credits. Credits reset monthly, do not roll over, have no cash value, and cannot be transferred.
- Caps. Cortex.md stops credit-based AI actions when the account reaches its monthly credit limit, so plan usage is capped.
- Renewals. Paid subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled through the account page or Stripe billing portal.
- Cancellations. Cancelling stops future renewals. Unless required by law or explicitly stated otherwise, the current paid period remains active until it ends.
- Refunds. Refund requests are reviewed case by case and may depend on applicable consumer law and payment processor rules.
4. Your content and local vault
You keep ownership of the content you save into Cortex.md and the markdown files written to your vault. Your vault is stored on your device in a folder you select. Cortex.md does not claim ownership of those files.
When you run an AI action, you grant Cortex.md the limited permission needed to process the relevant page content, document text, note excerpts, prompt, or other selected material so the requested feature can work.
5. Managed AI and outputs
Cortex.md no longer requires you to bring your own AI provider API key. Hosted AI requests are handled through Cortex.md infrastructure and third-party AI providers. AI outputs may be incomplete, inaccurate, or unsuitable for your purpose. You are responsible for reviewing outputs before relying on them.
Cortex.md is not designed to provide legal, medical, financial, tax, or other professional advice. Do not rely on AI output as a substitute for qualified professional judgment.
6. Availability, changes, and termination
Cortex.md is in open beta and may change as the product develops. Features may be added, changed, limited, or removed. We may suspend or terminate access if an account violates these terms, creates security risk, causes service abuse, or must be restricted by law.
The service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the extent permitted by law, Cortex.md disclaims implied warranties and is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages.
7. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, except where mandatory local consumer law gives you additional rights.
8. Contact
For questions about these terms, billing, or account access, contact Cortex.md through the support channel listed on the Chrome Web Store listing or from your account page.
